Charlton Hall Farm Cottages
Chathill, Alnwick
Northumberland NE67 5DZ

  Introduction

Charlton Hall Farm is situated in the coastal belt of Northumberland, six miles north of Alnwick and its famous castle and gardens. The farm has one hundred and fifty acres of park and woodlands, farmed in hand by the Thorp family. It locates in a quiet pocket of beautiful countryside with rolling fields under vast skies where the sun rises over beaches and sets onto the hills and moorland of the Cheviots.

Of the five cottages on the estate - four have been newly restored to their traditional country style with open fire places or woodburning stoves and cosy interiors.

Ideal for a country hideaway, yet three miles from the white sandy beaches and magnificent castles of this region.

The farm is still owned and worked by the same family for nearly one hundred and fifty years. The ancient parkland and woodlands are perfect for scenic walks along the Shippton Burn which runs through the heart of this land under stone bridges to fill the trout lake before meandering towards the north sea.

Alternatively, stroll through the woodland that bursts with bluebells and other wild flowers through spring and summer.

The first member of this family to own Charlton Hall planted some speciality trees now in their maturity. These alone, with the Victorian walled garden (under reconstruction), and the Georgian main house, provide a little majesty to this quaint old place.

The wildlife is abundant here due to the careful environmental schemes endorsed. Nesting buzzards, roe deer, a den of foxes, set of badgers, mad march hares boxing away in the stubble fields and the countless small furry creatures. The farm currently stocks a few hundred sheep with a view to collecting some rare breeds in the future.

A cross country jumping course takes riders through the woodland and in some of the fields for the pleasure of those guests who would like to bring their horses; the beaches nearby are also excellent for riding. There is ample stabling and grazing at the farm and bedding and hay can be arranged in advance.

The trout lake is under reconstruction in the heart of the property which was damaged by the winter rains, but permission has been given for guests to use another lake just next door, while the work is being carried out.
